After working almost all day on the servers yesterday, I thought I would provide you with some sort of update...
Originally I was hoping to provide you all with a Feed the Beast (FTB) server running the modpack, Departed. Unfortunately this was not possible due to the different versions of Minecraft needed and different launchers.
In order to keep everything running with 1.8 (and hopefully 1.9 when it comes out) I wanted to set up a series of servers which would provide options as well as keeping the existing compatibility.
At the moment, the existing Survival server (World of Wilson Waffling) is up and running as usual. This will not change for a while, since I am currently working on the others and then will link this one into my new empire :).
This server is going to be the main starting point for all the servers, with the lobby being surrounded by a creative world. Portals will exist here to travel instaneously to the other worlds, with a /hub command available to bring you back here. Within this world, you can build your epic builds without worrying about resources or restrictions. Let your automation go wild, as long as you don't lag the servers. Remember that Grief Prevention will be operating on all servers, so keep your builds protected.
One of the new servers is a SkyBlock server. This is where you can create your own sky based island and start living among the clouds! I spent the majority of yesterday trying to create a 'void' world with just the ocean and then set a suitable spawn point. Yes - many attempts ended with me falling and drowning! At the moment, things are going well with this and soon this will be ready for some testing. As soon as a get the permissions sorted. There are a range of challenges within this world as well as the ability to work in groups and set warps to your islands. A full description/tutorial for the commands will be available on this site as soon as the server goes live.
You never realise how much work there is running a server until you actually start to do it and how steep the learning curve is. Currently on the survival world, the permissions are controlled by GroupManger. In order to ensure that these permissions are the same across all servers either the files would need to be copied or, a more efficient way, would be to use PermissionsEx and link it to a MySQL database. Yes, it was all new to me as well! Due to the permissions being stored in a central database, new servers can just be linked to the database and the permissions are implemented. Although this is taking some time, it will mean that ranks and permissions will be the same across all servers - although abilities like '/fly' will be removed on the Skyblock server -how? I'm not sure yet.
So, currently we have the lobby/creative world, a bungee cord server (small which you can't log onto), the survival world (existing world) and Skyblock. I actually have one more server which currently has nothing on. There are a few options for this server. Initially I might use it as the minigames server but future plans might include a Prision World or PVP server - with the option of the plugin Factions. I also do want to create an adventure world which will be constantly changing, but this will take some time. Maybe the job for next summer.
If you have any questions or ideas for the additional server then leave a comment below. If you are interested in joining the developing 'empire' then don't forget to send your application by following this link.
Hope to see you all building soon!
